Understanding Thread Pitch: Will My NiSi Circular Filter Fit?

Roger Rosales

If you’ve ever shopped for filters, you’ve probably noticed that most lenses list a filter thread size in millimeters — like 67mm, 77mm, or 95mm. But there’s another important spec that’s often overlooked: thread pitch. At NiSi, we design our filters to match the most common thread standards — but not all lenses follow the same rules. Let’s take a closer look at what thread pitch is and how it affects filter compatibility.

What Is Thread Pitch?

Thread pitch refers to how coarse or fine the threads are on your lens or filter — measured in millimeters per thread. It may seem like a minor spec, but it determines whether your filter attaches smoothly or not at all.

  • The standard thread pitch is 0.75mm, which is used by most camera lenses and filters.
  • Some lenses, especially in very small or very large sizes, use non-standard thread pitches like 0.5mm or 1.00mm.
  • Mismatched thread pitches can lead to cross-threading, loose fits, or filters that don’t screw on at all.

Why It Matters

Trying to force a mismatched thread pitch can permanently strip the threads on your lens or filter. If it doesn’t screw in smoothly, stop and double-check compatibility. Using the wrong thread pitch can:

  • Prevent the filter from screwing in
  • Cause cross-threading and damage
  • Result in loose or unstable mounting

NiSi Circular Filter Thread Pitch Guide

To help you get the right fit, here’s how NiSi circular filters are threaded:

  • 1.00mm thread pitch (coarse)
    Used for: 86mm, 95mm, 105mm, 112mm, and 115mm
These sizes are often found on cinema lenses and fast zooms like the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.
  • 0.5mm thread pitch (fine)
    Used for: 27mm, 30mm, and 39mm
These are compact sizes typically found on small cameras or rangefinder lenses.
  • 0.75mm thread pitch (standard)
    Used for all other sizes
This is the most common pitch used in photography, compatible with most DSLR and mirrorless lenses.

Common Compatibility Questions

Q: I have a Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 with a 95mm filter thread. Will NiSi filters fit?
Yes. This lens uses a 95mm thread with a 1.00mm pitch, and NiSi 95mm filters are made with the same coarse thread pitch for a perfect fit.

Q: Can I use a 77mm NiSi filter on my standard DSLR lens?
Yes. The 77mm size uses the standard 0.75mm pitch, just like most photo lenses.

Q: I’m using a compact lens with a 39mm filter thread — will a NiSi filter fit?
Yes. NiSi 39mm filters are made with a fine 0.5mm pitch, matching the lens thread exactly.

Q: What other lenses use non-standard thread pitches?
Yes. Other lenses that we know of that have a coarse (1.00mm) thread pitch are the Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 and the Zeiss Milvus 15mm f2 lens.

Thread Pitch Also Applies to Adapter Rings

It’s not just filters that require the correct thread pitch—adapter rings, such as step-up rings, are equally important. These rings are designed to allow a larger filter to be used on a lens with a smaller thread diameter, but if the thread pitch isn’t compatible, you’ll run into the same problems: cross-threading, loose connections, or filters that simply won’t attach. That’s why all NiSi step-up rings are engineered with the same thread pitch standards as our circular filters, ensuring a precise, secure fit across the board. Whether you’re adapting a 95mm filter to a smaller lens or using a 39mm filter on a compact camera, you can trust that NiSi step-up rings follow the exact same pitch guidelines to maintain full compatibility and protect your gear.

NiSi Thread Pitch Standards Recap:

  • 1.00mm thread pitch – 86mm, 95mm, 105mm, 112mm, 115mm
  • 0.5mm thread pitch – 27mm, 30mm, 39mm
  • 0.75mm thread pitch – All other sizes

Getting the right fit isn’t just about diameter—it’s about precision at every level of design. That’s why NiSi manufactures all circular filters and adapter rings to meet exact industry thread pitch standards, with precision-machined threads and consistent quality across the board. Whether you’re using a compact prime or a cinema zoom, you can trust that NiSi filters and accessories are built to fit right—and last. When you choose NiSi, you’re investing in performance, reliability, and peace of mind.
